Boysko Bulletin-#10

Dear Friends,

I’m hoping that you can join me for several events this week.  On Monday, I’m hosting a Town Hall with Delegate John Bell and Senator Jennifer Wexton. Thursday, I’ll pour you a drink at Jimmy’s to benefit Herndon-Reston FISH. Friday, I head to the farthest reaches of Virginia to volunteer at the Remote Area Medical Clinic (RAM) in Wise County.  While I’m driving back, you can be saving lives by donating blood at Floris United Methodist Church - the Inova Bloodmobile will be there. Finally, I’ve included an opportunity for our High School juniors and seniors and college students.  As you may know, cybersecurity is critically important and we need to educate our workforce.  Virginia is partnering with the SANS Institute which is offering a free cyber security computer game.  Students who excel will win scholarships. Practice now through July 28 and then play for real August 1 - 28. This is a fun way to figure out if a cybersecurity career is a good fit for our students.

Kind regards,

Jennifer

Herndon-Reston FISH Benefit at Jimmy’s in Herndon - Thursday

Come to Jimmy's for dining and drinks on Thursday, July 20th from 6 - 10 p.m. There will be live music and great raffles. I’ll be guest bartending along with other locals. Herndon-Reston FISH, Inc. (Friendly, Instant, Sympathetic Help) is a volunteer, non-sectarian, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to helping people meet emergencies and short-term needs. Fellow bartenders include Bridgestreet CEO Sean Worker and Macedon Technologies VP Tim Kelly.

Look for the FISH décor and balloons inside and out. Jimmy’s is in the heart of Historic Herndon at  697 Spring Street.

Headed to Wise, Virginia to Volunteer for RAM - Remote Area Medical Clinic

On Friday, I head to Wise, Virginia - close to as southwest as you can go and still be in Virginia - to volunteer at the Remote Area Medical Clinic. Patients line up at midnight for free tickets to see doctors, dentists and opticians.  This is the only medical care available for many of our fellow Virginians.  Learn more at http://ramusa.org/volunteer/.

Play CyberStart - a Free Video Game for VA HS Juniors & Seniors & College Students

Scholarships will be awarded to students who excel in the free SANS Institute CyberStart program.  Practice the game now thru July 28, 2017. Then play the full-scale program from August 1 - 28, 2017.  Governor McAuliffe supports the program:  “Growing Virginia’s cyber workforce is foundational to maintaining our position as a national leader in cyber security. This is a great opportunity for us to expand our talent pipeline by engaging young people interested in learning more about cyber security and directing them to the appropriate training and career coaching.”

When asked why SANS is making this investment, SANS Director of Research, Alan Paller said, “Because the nation desperately needs more highly-skilled cyber professionals, and we have new evidence that CyberStart will radically improve the quality and preparation of people entering the cybersecurity field.  SANS trains more than 30,000 advanced cybersecurity professionals each year for military and intelligence organizations and for large high-tech companies in the U.S. and its allies. We discovered that those who have mastered the topics taught and measured in the CyberStart program do far better than others in the advanced cybersecurity courses that prepare the critically needed people. By opening CyberStart to hundreds of thousands of students we may be able to help the nation identify the next generation of talented people who will excel in this critical field.” Learn more at cyberva.virginia.gov.
